Jewellery contains varying quantities of the metall gold. The caratage is either given
in Carat (ct) or in thousandths (e. g. 585/1000). One carat is 1/24 of the total mass.
Pure gold has a caratage of 24 ct.
This calculator determines how much gold an alloy of known caratage contains.
When you know the price of gold, you can calculate the value of the gold in the
jewellery.
Please note that usually the value of the jewellery is higher than the value of the
pure gold, since the artistic work is not counted. In addition, the value of the
other compounds of the alloy are not considered. As examples this could be copper,
silver or platinum.
Usage:
Type the mass of your jewellery into the corresponding field. You may determine the
mass with letter scales. Then give the caratage. There exists a selection of
common values already. The caratage you find on a stamp on the jewellery.
The price of gold you can either give in dollar per ounce troy or in euro per
gram. It depends on the currency in which you give the price, in which currency
the value is calculated. You may either give the price of gold in both units. In this
case the exchange rate between euro and dollar is calculated, by which you may
control your input. Or you give one price and the exchange rate. If only one price is
known, the value of the jewellery is calculated only in that curency. The fields
with input values are shaded in light green while fields with calculated values
are coloured in pink.

Example: You want to determine the value of the gold in a golden chain of
14 carat with a mass of 23 gram. Type "23" into the field for the mass
and choose the caratage "585/1000, 14 ct".

button you can read already, that the chain contains about 13.5 grams of gold.
The actual price of gold is 784 US$, as example, and the exchange rate is
1.34 US$/€. Type these values into the corresponding fields.
After another mouseclick on any free space of the window or on the "calculate"
button you can read, that the value of the gold in the chain amounts to
253.10 € or 339.15 $.
